The McDonalds Data Breach: What Went Right?
In the race to balance productivity and social distancing for companies during the pandemic, a recent survey from Ernst found that “78% of respondents believe COVID-19 prompted their organizations to make unnecessary short-term investments in technology, leaving the companies at risk of data being stored on a wide range of devices.”
The breakout of post-pandemic disposal of these devices was eye-opening:
- 28% said they’d be erased and resold
- 27% said they’d be erased and reused internally
- 16% said they’d be stored in the office until needed
- 12% said they’d be erased and recycled
- 9% said they’d be sent to an ITAD provider
- 4% said they’d they remain in use/replace older equipment
- 3% said they’d be erased and donated
- 1% said they’d undergo physical destruction without prior data erasure.
It’s alarming to see that only 9% would be sent to an ITAD provider. While McDonalds continues to battle the latest data breach, they made the right moves.
- They invested heavily in data security
- Payment information wasn’t accessed by the hack
- Speed – they found these breaches and dealt with them swiftly.
